Kevin Spacey Sexual Assault Allegations

In late October of 2017, famous actor from Broadway (the original cast of RENT) and screen (such as Star Trek: Discovery) Anthony Rapp alleged Kevin Spacey of having made a sexual advance at him when he was underage. At the time, Anthony Rapp was only fourteen years old and Kevin Spacey twenty six.

In 2001, Anthony Rapp had told the same story in The Advocate but they’d redacted Kevin Spacey’s name at the time to avoid legal troubles. After Rapp told the story again in 2017, Kevin Spacey claimed to not recall the encounter but blamed drunkenness if it had happened.

In September of 2020, Anthony Rapp sued Kevin Spacey. The accusations included sexual battery, sexual assault, and intentionally inflicting emotional distress on a child. In turn, 15 other accusers came forward.

One was an anchorwoman who accused Kevin Spacey of sexually abusing her son. One was Harry Dreyfuss, the son of famous actor Richard Dreyfuss. Eight of them were people who’d worked with him on House of Cards.

Others were people who claimed he’d groped and assaulted various men when he worked as the artistic director of London’s Old Vic Theatre.

In May of 2022, in the United Kingdom, a British court charged Kevin Spacey of 4 separate sexual assault counts against 3 men.

In response to Anthony Rapp’s initial accusations, Kevin Spacey came out in a statement that was heavily criticized by many people. Some of the names included Wanda Sykes, Lance Bass, George Takei, and Billy Eichner.

They claimed that, in so doing, he was trying to shift the attention away from Anthony Rapp’s allegation against him. They also said that he was trying to use alcohol as an excuse for pedophiliac behavior, and also was implying that gay people were predisposed to sexually assaulting minors.

Due to the allegations, Netflix immediately suspended House of Cards season 6 in order to be retooled. They also set up an anonymous hotline for the crew to report complaints against him, as well as providing counselors and legal advisors.

Additionally, Kevin Spacey was cut from the show, and the season was cut down to 8 episodes. Similarly, he was cut from the at-the-time upcoming Netflix film Gore. Meanwhile, he was cut from a film called All the Money in the World, his entire role being reshot with Christopher Plummer.

He also had various awards rescinded, and his publicist as well as his talent agency dropped him.

On Christmas Eve 2018, Kevin Spacey posted a YouTube video in which, in character as Frank Underwood, he tried to deny the actual allegations against him. He did another similar video the next Christmas Eve labelled “Kill Them With Kindness”.

The next year, he did one called “1-800 XMAS” that ended with him expressing sadness for people during the COVID pandemic. Critics have described the videos as being tone deaf and deeply bizarre.
