Spin Magazine would later call his album called To Russell, My Brother, Who I Slept With the greatest comedy album ever released.

Rather than focusing on the sort of risqué and controversial humor that was gaining in popularity at the time, Billy Cosby instead told funny stories from his childhood, although many African American critics questioned why the subject of race always seemed to be deliberately missing from those stories.

Bill Cosby’s other albums are I Started Out as a Child, Why Is There Air?, Wonderfulness, Revenge, It’s True! It’s True!, Live: Madison Square Garden Center, When I Was a Kid, Inside the Mind of Bill Cosby, Fat Albert, My Father Confused Me…What Must I Do? Afterwards, Bill Cosby pursued a graduate degree while also appearing in a number of segments for the educational series for children The Electric Company on PBS. He got his MA in 1972, and then was back on primetime TV with a variety show called The New Bill Cosby Show that ran for only one season.

His Saturday morning cartoon show for kids, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, which he hosted and which was based on his standup stories about his childhood, was much more popular. From 1972 until 1979, it ran under that title, and then in 1979 became The New Fat Albert Show, and finally The Adventures of Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids.

In 1976, Bill Cosby got his Doctor of Education degree. Later, Temple University gave him an honorary BA for “life experience”.

Throughout the 1970s, Bill Cosby joined forces with a number of other Black actors to release comedy films to act as a counter to the violent blaxploitation genre at the time: Uptown Saturday Night; Let’s Do It Again; and Mother, Jugs & Speed. Bill Cosby had his greatest success with the legendary sitcom The Cosby Show, which debuted in 1984 on NBC. The show featured a great deal of parallels to Bill Cosby’s real life. The lead characters, Dr Cliff Huxtable and his wife Clair were college educated and rich, like Camille and him, and also, like them, had 5 kids.

The show was a massive hit, and stayed either in the #1 ratings spot, or very close to it, for the entirety of the 8 years it was on the air. It also had a hit spinoff, A Different World, about an all African American university.

In 1996, Cosby again costarred with Phylicia Rashad as well as the legendary Madeline Kahn in a new sitcom called Cosby. The show lasted 4 years, Madeline Kahn tragically dying of cancer during its run. From 1998 to 2000, Bill Cosby also hosted Kids Say the Darndest Things, which also ended the same year as Cosby.

In the wake of sexual assault allegations that spanned the length of his career back to the 60s, many of Cosby’s projects after this point ended up being scrapped and The Cosby Show reruns were pulled from syndication. His reputation as a lovable family man were too irreparably damaged for viewers to see this cute, cuddly persona he’d fostered.
