Odis Oliver Flores, otherwise known as OT Genasis is an American rapper and songwriter. He is a recording artist who has been on the music scene for the last eleven years, having started out in 2011. He is well known for his aggressive on-stage presence, OT Genasis is best known for the hit numbers “Cut it” and “Coco” which became immediate hits even as they courted controversy.

OT Genasis Place of Birth and Early Life

Odis Oliver Flores was born on the 18th June 1987 in Atlanta Georgia. He traces his ancestry to Garifuna immigrants from Belize. Not much is known about the rapper’s parents or family life. What we do know is that he spent his childhood in Long Beach, California, and was lucky to escape a life on the streets.

Long Beach is notorious for its gangs and Flores had to learn at an early age to keep out of trouble. At some stage during his teenage years, he was lured into the underworld and claims to have been a “follower”.

According to the biography on his website, he saw a lot of “followers” killed. He actually describes the fear of having a gun held to your head. He credits music with saving him from the worst that the streets had to offer. Nevertheless, he witnessed plenty of crime on the streets of Long Beach.

OT Genasis started to write music from a young age and found musical influence from the likes of Snoop Dog, Tupac Shakur Cutty Ranks, Buju Banton, T.I., Ludacris, and Jay-Z.

His family was desperate. So, for a while, he put music aside to make money as a hustler on the streets of his hometown.

According to his bio, he brings the same level of aggression as he put into hustling onto the stage. Today his music still contains that raw bellicosity, he learned from during his hustling career.

OT Genasis caught the attention of 50 cents in 2011 with his song Jackie Chan. He was quickly signed to 50 cent’s G-Unit Records. Yet, “Jackie Chan” only found moderate success.

Still, in 2012, he went on to release his debut mixtape by the name of “Black Belt”. It had 24 tracks that featured artists such as Rich Lowe and Mils.

At about the same time, he started to sing a new number “Touchdown” on the streets and in clubs. It was to become a club hit with a faithful following.

OT Genasis at Conglomerate

OT Genasis joined Conglomerate Records after G-Unit Records dropped him. Conglomerate Records was owned by Busta Rhymes, a famous rapper, who had walked into one of OT Genasis club sessions and admired the vitality of the show. Busta Rhyme told people that he loved the fearless ferociousness of the OT Genasis stage performance. This is why he signed him.

OT Genasis released the “Touchdown Remix” while working for Busta Rhyme. Touchdown referred to street jostling and it became well-liked in the clubs of Los Angeles. When he worked live in the clubs OT Genasis was often asked to do several repeats of the song.

The Touchdown remix album included singers like French Montana, Juicy Jay, and Busta Rhyme. It made number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The Coco sensation

Produced a few months after the Touchdown Remix, one of the most popular of OT Genasis’ songs “Coco” achieved cult status. Many fans viewed this song as one of the best anthems of the decade.

“Coco” made it to the top 40 on the Billboard 100 in the United States and achieved 60 million views on YouTube. It was also the song that got the highest number of Shazam views in 2014.

A graphic video supported the Coco” debut. Both song and video were released on the WorldStarHipHop website. In the video, OT Genasis shows exactly what a day as a hustler on the streets looks like.

Many television stations declined to play the graphic video, but OT Genasis with the support of Busta Rhyme felt strongly about the necessity of pairing the raunchy song with a video to match.

After “Coco”, OT Genasis went on to make the mixtape “Catastrophic 2” for Conglomerate in 2014. He also performed in the BET Hip Hop Awards with Loaded Lux, Kevin Gates, and G-Easy.

In 2015 he released “Rhythm and Bricks”. It contained 15 songs. He collaborated with rappers Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne, and Snoop Dog, all well-known stars in the world of Hip Hop and Rap to make many of the songs on the album. These include “Love Me for Me” and “This Work”.

In 2016, OT Genasis released “Coke and Butter” once again teaming up with other artists. The album featured the songs “Thick” and Get Racks”. They were sung with artists such as 2 Chainz, TI, and Quavo. Conglomerate and Atlantic Records released the album which contained songs mostly written by OT Genasis.

No Albums for a While

OT Genasis hasn’t made any more albums since 2016. Though he has released three singles. They’re called “Push it”, “Do it” and “Cut it”. “Cut it” peaked at 35 on the Billboard 100.

The song featured Young Dolph, the famous Memphis rapper. Young Dolph was sadly murdered in November 2021. Key Glock and OT Genasis played at the Rolling Loud festival performed in honor of Young Dolph in December of that year.

OT Genasis had shared the BET Hip Hop Award for 2016 with Young Dolph for the song “Cut it”.

In 2017, OT Genasis collaborated with several artists to make songs like “No Tomorrow” and “All on Me”.

Beyonce performed the OT Genasis song “Everyone Crazy” at Coachella 2018. She also used it as part of her “On the Run II” tour with Jay Z.

iPhone featured the song “I Look Good” for its “Doin Laps” commercial in 2022.

OT Genasis recently made an Instagram announcement. He had landed a role in the movie Dutch directed by Preston Whitmore. The movie is an adaptation of a book and takes place in the drug world.

Not much is known about OT Genasis’s personal life since he prefers to keep his love-life and family history under wraps. Still, he is known to have had relationships with at least two women.

In 2016, he dated Malaysia Pargo, a television reality star from Basketball Wives LA, for a short while. He went on to date Malika Haqq in 2017. On the 14th of March 2020 OT Genasis and Malika Haqq had a son, Ace Flores.

The couple had called their relationship off in 2019 before Ace was born. They had been in a relationship for two years. OT Genasis and Malika Haqq plan to co-parent their son.

Ace is OT’s second son, Genasis Flores was born on the 25th of March 2010 from a different relationship.  OT revealed in a 2016 interview that his eldest son is autistic.

Malika Haqq is a best friend to Khloe Kardashian. She is best known for her role in the 2005 film “Sky High”. Her twin sister also took part in the movie.

According to Malika Haqq’s Instagram profile, OT Genasis supported her throughout the pregnancy and even attended the baby shower thrown for her by Khloe Kardashian.

OT Genasis is not shy of controversy and has made the news a few times for some controversial behavior.

OT confessed to loving cocaine and he refused to apologize. He believes that there should be songs and videos made about drugs. The song “Coco” is about his love of cocaine.

The rapper also has a prison record but it isn’t for drugs. He was caught with a gun while going through the terminal at LAX. He was transported to the LA Police Department. He received a two-day sentence at the LA County Jail and three years’ probation for the offense.

In April 2020, OT Genasis got into an online argument with Keyshia Cole via Twitter. He said that her “pussy smelt like fish fingers”. He claimed that he was just joking and blamed others for making an issue of it. He apologized but later removed the apology.

Keyshia Cole reacted by saying he acts like a 7-year-old. The argument found its origins in OT Genasis remaking of the Keyshia Cole song ‘Love”. It was a parody remix and Cole was not happy with the result. She had the song removed from YouTube.
