The Real Housewives of Orange County, which fans lovingly call RHOC for short, is a reality TV show on the Bravo Network that set off a phenomenon of spin offs set in various American cities.

The original show has, as of the present time, been on for 16 seasons, all of which follow the lives, both professional and off the clock, of a number of privileged women who live in and around Orange County, California, United States of America.

The Real Housewives juggernaut first appeared at the start of 2005, when the Bravo TV network first greenlit the series. At the beginning, that’s what the show was called, simply The Real Housewives, but by the time it made it to air, it had been renamed The Real Housewives of Orange County.

It’s possible that the creators of the show realized the future potential for spin offs set in other cities, which is exactly what happened. This might explain why they ultimately decided to specify Orange County in the title itself.

Originally, Scott Dunlop, the creator of the franchise, explained that the show was meant to only cover women who lived within one specific gated community located within Coto de Caza, California, United States of America.

When the eventual show expanded out of that community, it’s possible that’s when they wanted to change the name to reflect that. The original name was also meant to refer to the fact that this reality show was inspired by fictional housewives, namely the Desperate Housewives from ABC’s juggernaut hit nighttime soap.

By contrast, these would be the “real” housewives, to distinguish it from the fictional ones, although of course, given reality shows are always far from actual reality, being edited and sculpted to tell a specific narrative, the “real” has always been quotation mark worthy.

Not to mention the fact that the “housewives” were all extremely affluent women whose lives were far from the average “housewife” who they presumably expected to be their core audience, along with an expected gay fan base, which it also received.

The Real Housewives, on the other end of the spectrum, exist in a world where the houses average at at over a million and a half dollars in value, and where the neighbors are made up of chief executive officers and former pro athletes.

The first season of The Real Housewives of Orange County focused on the lives of Vicki Gunvalson, Kimberly Bryant, Lauri Waring, Jeana Keough, and Jo De La Rosa. It launched in March of the year 2006.

After the first season, Kimberly Bryant left the show. She was replaced by Tammy Knickerbocker the next year, 2007. Kimberly Bryant did continue to reappear in guest starring appearances on the second season, however, even though she was no longer a regular star of the show.

When the third season began, however, there was yet another cast change. Jo De La Rosa this time decided to leave, and she was replaced by Tamra Judge. Not far into the season, the show gained yet another cast member in the form of Quinn Fry.

Over the course of the season, Kimberly Bryant and Jo De La Rosa both returned as guest stars. And by the end of the season, Quinn Fry, who had only just joined the show, was gone, as was Tammy Knickerbocker, who had only joined the year before.

At the start of the fourth season, The Real Housewives of Orange County introduced yet another new housewife to replace some of the departing ones, namely Gretchen Rossi. Meanwhile, Lauri Waring, who by that point had become Lauri Peterson, left in episode three of that season.

Lauri Peterson was replaced the very next week with Lynne Curtin in episode 4, who took her place. That season, Kimberly Bryant and Jo De La Rose returned to the show for the very final time in guest starring roles during the last episode of the season.

Season 5 brought even more change to the show. Jeana Keough left by the end of the season. Meanwhile, Alexis Bellino joined the cast over the courses of the season, in order to replace the outgoing Jeana Keough and Lynne Curtin, who also left at the end of the fifth season.

Tammy Knickerbocker, Quinn Fry, and Lauri Peterson, appeared in guest star roles in various episodes.

Season 6 started in March of the year 2011 and brought on even more new characters, including Peggy Tanous as a regular, and Fernanda Rocha, who appeared as a recurring guest star role, introduced as the housewives’ friend rather than one of the main housewives herself. Jeana Keough also recurred as a friend.

Meanwhile, Lynne Curtin, Quinn Fry, and Tammy Knickerbocker again all made return appearances.

Season 7 kicked off in February of the year 2012 by The Real Housewives of Orange Country bringing on yet another new regular cast member, namely Heather Dubrow. Both Jeana Keough and Peggy Tanous (who was already no longer a regular) appeared as guest stars.

This season also included the show launching Sarah Winchester in a recurring role as another one of the housewives’ tertiary friends.

In the 8th season, beginning in April of the year 2013, Lydia McLaughlin joined The Real Housewives of Orange County as yet another new regular starring housewife role. Lauri Peterson recurred regularly as well as a housewives’ friend, despite the fact that she herself used to be a regular real housewife herself.

This season brought even more change to this ever changing series, with Alexis Bellino, Lydia McLaughlin (who was only new that year), Gretchen Rossi, and finally Lauri Peterson all leaving the show for the time being, and in some cases for good.

Season 9 brought on two brand new housewives to the mix, namely Lizzie Rovsek and Shannon Storms Beador, as well as another new recurring cast member in the friend role, Danielle Gregorio. It launched on the fourteenth of April in the year 2014.

The next season, the 10th, meanwhile launched on the eighth off June in the year 2015, and this time around, Lizzie Rovsek was no longer one of the main housewives but had herself taken on a housewives’ friend position. In the main position she’d vacated, the show now had Meghan King Edmonds.

Lynne Curtin, Jeana Keough, and Tammy Knickerbocker all appeared at various points throughout this year.

Then we come to season 11. Debuting the twentieth of June in the year 2016, it brought Kelly Dodd onto the show, who later became Kelly Leventhal after a new marriage. Jeana Keough again guest starred. At the end of this season, Heather Dubrow left the show.

The 12th season brought a surprise, however, in the form of Lydia McLaughlin coming back as a series regular on the tenth of July in the year 2017. She wasn’t the only addition to this season however.

The show also introduced Peggy Sulahian this year as a housewife. Jeana Keough, Gretchen Rossi, and Lizzie Rovsek all came back as guest stars this season as well. Meghan King Edmonds, Lydia McLaughlin, and Peggy Sulahian were all gone by the end of the season, however.

July in the year 2018 was when the 13th season began, brining with it Emily Simpson and Gina Kirschenheither as the latest new “real” housewives to add to the ever expanding and mutating line up.

Season 14 debuted in the sixth of August in the year 2019. The new housewife of Season 14 was Braunwyn Windham-Burke. Meanwhile, Vicki Gunvalson, who had been with the show since the first season, was now no longer a regular housewife. Rather than leave all together, she was now one of the housewives’ friends.

Meghan King Edmonds and Alexis Bellino both made guest star appearances this season. At the end of the season, Vicki Gunvalson transitioned from her non series regular status to finally leaving all together, along with Tamra Judge, who had been a regular since season 3.

At this point, production on the series was put on hold from March through to July of the year 2020 as a result of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic that was raging across the globe at the time.

The Real Housewives of Orange Country finally returned in October of the year 2020 with their 15th season. This one saw a new housewife, Elizabeth Lyn Vargas, enter the ranks of the many real housewives from over the years. Meanwhile, Lizzie Rovsek guest starred in one episode.

Meanwhile, Jeana Keough took on the role of series narrator in the first episode of the year. By the end of this season, Kelly Dodd, Braunwyn Windham-Burke, and even the brand-new Elizabeth Lyn Vargas had all flown the coop as series regulars.

In December of the year 2021, the 16th season of The Real Housewives of Orange County debuted, featuring the returns of Shannon Storms Beador, Gina Kirschenheither, and Emily Simpson.

Meanwhile, Heather Dubrow came back as a series regular, and the show added two more new housewives: Noella Bergener and Jen Armstrong. This is the year Nicole James joined the cast as well as a “friend”. This helped Nicole James net worth.

However, after only a handful of episodes, Nicole James was dropped from the show due to what were alleged to be potential issues between the producers and her. There is no word on how this may have affected or be affecting Nicole James net worth as of the present time.
