Kevin Costner’s Career

Kevin Costner’s first film was originally called Hot Malibu Summer when it was filmed in 1978 but it wasn’t released until 3 years later under the new title Sizzle Beach, U.S.A., and then released again in 1986. Due to this odd schedule, many think his debut film was actually his second, The Touch (which was also released as Stacy’s Knights) from 1983.
In 1982, Kevin Costner also had a very small role in Ron Howard’s film Night Shift as Frat Boy No 1. In 1983, Kevin Costner did an Apple commercial, and then appeared in Table for Live and Testament. He also filmed flashback sequences for the classic film The Big Chill, but they were cut before the film was released.
The director of the film, Lawrence Kasdan was profusely apologetic as he loved Kevin Costner’s work in the film and promised him a role in a future film of his. That happened in 1985 with Silverado, which was one of Kevin Costner’s breakout roles.
That year, he also starred in American Flyers and Fandango, as well as acting with Kiefer Sutherland in a special hour long installment of the show Steven Spielberg’s Amazing Stories.
In 1987, Kevin Costner finally became a bona fide movie star thanks to his role as Eliot Ness in the classic film The Untouchables, and then No Way Out the same year. In 1988 and 1989, his fame continued to soar thanks to two baseball films, Bill Durham and Field of Dreams.
In 1990, Kevin Costner and Jim Wilson joined forces to create Tig Productions. Their first production was Dances With Wolves, a film that Kevin Costner not only starred in but also directed. It was a massive success, not only being critically acclaimed and doing great box office, but winning 7 Oscars out of 12 nominations.
Of the seven Academy Awards it won, two were specifically for Kevin Costner himself. He won Best Director, and as the film won Best Picture, it was awarded to him as one of the producers.
That same year, Kevin Costner also starred in Revenge. In 1991, Kevin Costner starred in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Oliver Stone’s conspiracy theory epic JFK. In 1992, Kevin Costner starred in The Bodyguard alongside Whitney Houston. In 1993, Kevin Costner starred in A Perfect World, directed by Clint Eastwood.
In 1994, Kevin Costner starred in Wyatt Earp, once again directed by Lawrence Kasdan. Although all of these had been huge hits, his other film from that year, The War, didn’t do as well.
This set the tone for his next run of films. Waterworld in 1995 (which Kevin Costner produced in addition to starring in) and The Postman in 1997 (which he directed as well) were terribly reviewed and, although the former actually did respectable box office, both became known as jokes in the industry.
The Postman practically swept the Golden Raspberry Awards, which gave it the “awards” of Worst Actor, Worst Director, and Worst Picture.
In 1996, Kevin Costner starred in Tin Cup, a golf-themed romcom with Rene Russo. In 1999, Kevin Costner starred with Robin Wright in the romantic drama Message in a Bottle, which got mixed reviews and mediocre box office return.
In 2000, Kevin Costner had a bit of a resurgence thanks to the film Thirteen Days. Then in 2003, he starred in and directed Open Range, a Western that was a surprise hit both commercially and in terms of reviews.
That same year, he got career-high level reviews for his role in The Upside of Anger. His next few films were The Guardian, Mr Brooks, and Rumour Has It. In 2006, Kevin Costner’s had his hand prints and foot prints set in concrete at the legendary Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.
In 2008, Tig Productions closed and he started Tree House Films. In 2008, Kevin Costner starred in a film called Swing Vote. In 2010, Kevin Costner did the film The Company Men with Chris Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones, and Ben Affleck.
In 2012, Kevin Costner starred in Hatfields & McCoys, a miniseries for the History Channel, which broke the network’s records with nearly fourteen million viewers. For his role, Kevin Costner won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe Award.
In 2013, Kevin Costner played Jonathan Kent, Clark Kent’s dad, in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, a Superman reboot. In 2014, Kevin Costner played Thomas Harper in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, and also starred in 3 Days to Kill, Draft Day, and Black or White (the latter of which he also produced).
In 2015, Kevin Costner acted in the film McFarland, USA. In 2016, Kevin Costner appeared in Hidden Figures. In 2017, Kevin Costner and Jessica Chastain co-starred in Molly’s Game, Aaron Sorkin’s first time directing a film. In 2018, Kevin Costner appeared regularly on the TV show Yellowstone.
In 2019, Kevin Costner voiced a dog called Enzo in The Art of Racing in the Rain.
Kevin Costner is also the lead singer of a country rock musical band called Kevin Costner & Modern West. In 2008, they put out their first album, Untold Truths. Their second album, Turn It On, came out in 2010. They also put out an album called Tales from Yellowstone, songs from which appeared on Yellowstone’s third season.
Kevin Costner has had a lifelong love of baseball, and as previously mentioned, numerous films of his are about the sport: The Upside of Anger, For Love of the Game, Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, and Chasing Dreams. He often attends Texas Longhorns games and practices near where he lives in Texas.
For a time, he also partially owned a team called the Lake County Fielders, an independent team in Illinois whose name was inspired by Field of Dreams.
