Kathy Griffin was born on the fourth of November in 1960 in Oak Park, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago), in the United States of America, under the full name Kathleen Mary Griffin. Her dad’s name was John Patrick Griffin, and her mom was Mary Margaret Griffin, though she always went by Maggie.

Kathy Griffin was the youngest of four, her older siblings being, in order of birth, Kenny Griffin, Joyce Griffin, Gary Griffin, and John Griffin. Kenny was significantly older, having been twenty three when she was born.

According to Kathy Griffin, she was always an extremely talkative child. She used to go over to her neighbors’ houses and told them gossipy stories that happened amongst her family, which is where she really learned how to tell funny stories, which set up her future career as a teller of funny stories.

Kathy Griffin so needed attention that she partially attributes it to an eating disorder she developed when her older siblings all eventually moved away from home. She also suffered from a great deal of anxiety at the time, particularly at the hands of her eldest brother, Kenny.

In addition to be addicted to drugs and often living on the streets, Kenny was prone to violence and abuse. When she was still a little girl, her brother, who was 30 years old at the time, would crawl into bed with her, and while it’s not clear whether any physical abuse happened, he later admitted to being a pedophile.

Kathy Griffin also went to a very strict Catholic school growing up, where the harsh nuns treated her so poorly that it turned her off of the idea of religion all together and contributed to her poor mental health at the time. She found escape, however, in the musical theatre program, acting in various shows.

This inspired her to pursue an acting career, which included an appearance on a commercial for the baseball team the White Sox, and by the time she turned eighteen, she convinced her parents that they should all move to L.A. so that she could follow her dreams of fame.

The next year, she went to a performance of the legendary comedy improv troupe The Groundlings, and instantly fell in love, knowing that it was definitely what she wanted to do with her life.
