He started his journey in the entertainment industry in 1999 which is when he started building a name for himself through releasing podcasts and engaging in a variety of media channels.

Despite his hard work, dedication and undeniable talent, his journey to fame only took flight in 2003 when he released “Pump It Up” with the  group that he was performing with at the time which was called Slaughterhouse. The rapper soon became famous for much more than his talent.

Joe Budden is a 41 year old rapper and media personality from the United States of America. The star was born in New York City on August 31, 1980.  He was raised primarily by his mother, Fay Sutherland, since his father who was a multi-instrumentalist was absent for a majority of his life, but it is evident that Budden inherited his musical skills from him.

Despite his father being absent, Budden still had a reasonably large family. He was one of five children in the family. Two of his brothers were twins and the other two were born a few years apart. The Sutherland brothers were raised in the Baptist religion and were required to attend church on Sundays.

When he was in his teenage years, Budden relocated to New Jersey with his mother and his brother who were his support system while he was growing up. Music was always the star’s passion. In fact, he was so focused on pursuing his career in music that he didn’t pay much attention to his studies. He was not a fan of school in general which is something one could expect from a majority of teenagers. 

Even though Budden was neglecting his studies, he refused to neglect his passion. He started rapping while he was in high school, but unfortunately, at this time he developed an addiction to illegal narcotics which caused further hardships and complications in the rapper’s life.

At this time, the rapper was attending a boarding school where he regularly engaged in rap battles with his peers. Naturally, being a caring soul, Budden’s mother could not allow her son to continue down this path of addiction. After seeing that her son was heading down a dark path, she finally confronted him about his addiction.

Since Budden had quite a close relationship with his mother, the conversation was quite deep and emotional. On July 3, 1997 the rapper finally agreed to willingly admit himself into a rehabilitation program which was the first turnaround point in the star’s life.

During this time, Budden started practicing freestyle rapping. He engaged in rap battles with some friends from school and, according to feedback that he provided to the press, he won a majority of. Unfortunately, as his addiction worsened prior to his admission, the rapper decided to drop out of school and never ended up completing his GED.

Thankfully his rehabilitation program was a soaring success. Budden cleaned up his act and turned his life around which allowed him to access his full potential and paved the way for his journey to fame.

Budden always had an entrepreneurial spirit and engaged in a variety of business ventures. In June of 2003 his debut album was released by Def Jam Recording, but this was not the first taste of success that the rapper had. In fact, his music started becoming popular in 2002 which was not long before his debut album was released.

Much to his surprise, Budden’s debut album was a roaring success. It gained such popularity that it was listed under the top 8 Billboard Hits shortly after it was released. The song that boosted Budden’s debut album was called “Pump it Up” which is still the rapper’s most famous and loved song to this day.

Other than it’s soaring popularity amongst fans, “Pump it Up” also received a Grammy nomination. The other song that contributed to the album’s success was called “Fire” which Budden released with Busta Rhymes.  The fact that the album made it onto the Billboard charts may be impressive, but what Budden didn’t realize at the stage was that this was only the beginning of the album’s success.

It wasn’t long after the release that Hollywood started to get a taste of what the rapper had to offer. In fact,  some of the tracks on the album had such a dynamic impact on some high-class producers in Hollywood that they were used as the soundtrack for the world-renowned film “The Fast and the Furious. His success didn’t stop there either. Eventually, more tracks from the album were used as soundtracks for popular films such as Mean Girls and Cradle 2: The Grave.

It was in the year 2007 that Budden’s music career really started to take flight. During this time Amalgam Digital invited the rapper to sign an independent contract with them which Budden willingly accepted. Two years later, in the year 2009, Budden released his second album which he called “Padded Room.” After the release of his second album he went on to release Mood Musik 3: The Album, Halfway House and Escape Route which was also made possible by Amalgam Digital.

In 2013, Budden released “No Love Lost” which was his third album at the time. A year later, in 2014, he released his fourth album which, quite contradictory to his third album, he named “All Love Lost.” All of Budden’s albums were a roaring success and pushed him further up the music industry’s food chain. As a matter of fact, the albums were such a roaring success that VH1 featured him in the third and fourth seasons of the “Love and Hip Hop: New York” series.

In 2008, Budden established the group “Slaughterhouse.” The group consisted of Joell Oritz, Kxng Crooked and Royce da 5’9. Together, the group released their first debut album in 2009. A few years later, in 2014 they released their second album which they called Welcome to our House.

The group had gained such an immense amount of popularity by this time that they were fortunate enough to feature some big names within the music industry in their album. Some of these artists included Eminem, Swizz Beats and Cee Lo Green. As it was with all of his previously released albums, Welcome to our House was a roaring success.

As a matter of fact, it was listed as number 2 on the Billboard Charts shortly after it’s release. Shortly after the release of thor second album, in 2016, the group released their third album which they called Glass House.

The level of success that Budden achieved in his rapping career is a mindblowing accomplishment in itself, but, being a man of many talents, Budden could not settle for anything less than the best. So, he stepped into the entertainment industry where he also made a name for himself. In 2015, Budden was cast in the hit TV show “Couples Therapy.”

He also started livestreaming on a variety of platforms including UStream and BlogTV where he gained an even greater following. After this, he decided to start his own podcast which he called “I’ll Name This Podcast Later.” The podcast also turned out to be a huge success which proves Budden’s ability to be successful at anything he tries.

At the start of his career, Budden worked in unison with Def Jam who was in charge of releasing his albums. Unfortunately, Def Jam started demanding changes in Budden’s music that contradicted the whole message that he was trying to deliver through his lyrics. Thankfully, Budden stayed true to himself and his art and refused to be bullied into selling himself out.

This started causing an increasing amount of conflict between Budden and Def Jam and eventually the conflict became intense enough to force the two parties to part ways. Once they parted ways, Budden signed his contract with Amalgam Digital and he later went on to win his first ever music award which was the Vibe Next Award.

Joe Budden is, without a doubt, one of the most talented lyricists and rappers of the modern era.
