Fred Durst’s Place Of Birth And Early Life

Beyond Fred Durst net worth, knowing about his early life can be interesting. He was born William Frederick Durst. His birthday is August 20, 1970. He was born in Jacksonville, Florida but spent several years in Orlando and grew up in Cherryville, North Carolina. Fred was a farm boy until fifth grade. He attended high school in Gastonia, North Carolina.

An interesting side note about Fred’s early life is his Wiccan background. His parents, Robert and Anita Durst raised him as a Wiccan. At age 12, Fred was already into the hip-hop culture. He studied rap, breakdance, and beatbox. He also learned to skateboard and d-jay. He also started to get into punk rock and heavy metal.

After high school, Durst decided to join the military, the US Navy branch. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a good fit, and he left after only two years. He returned to his father and started working as a tattoo artist and landscaper.

At this time, he thought it would be fun to play in a band that could blend hip-hop and rock. It is at this point; Fred began to get his idea out there and find band members who could see his vision.

Fred Durst’s Career

Fred Durst started his music career in 1994. He joined Sam Rivers, Wes Borland, and John Otto to form Limp Bizkit. While it may not make sense, they chose the name Limp Bizkit to “actively discourage” people from listening. This reverse psychology seemed to work with their hit “Straight Up,” which grew rather large in the underground scene.

Korn came to Durst’s hometown and networking; he invited the group to his home. He gave the group their demo tapes. Korn was cooperative, listening to the music and helping Limp Bizkit sign with their label.

Wes Borland decided to leave the band, and that’s when DJ Lethal joined in the fun. By 1997, Limp Bizkit signed a new record deal and released a debut album called “Three Dollar Bill, Y’all.”

Unfortunately, the album didn’t do particularly well. Fred gained the title of Senior Vice President of A and R as part of Interscope Records. By collaborating with Korn and Soul Fly, Durst grew his career. He also took an interest in filmmaking and directed Limp Bizkit’s music videos.

In 1999, Limp Bizkit released “Significant Other,” which gained the band popularity. The album hit number one on the music charts, and critics began to praise the unique genre.

It was not until 2000, with the release of “Chocolate Starfish,” that the band truly gained its standing in the industry. They also released “Hot Dog Flavored Water.” “Chocolate Starfish” hit platinum the first week it was out and five more times. Critics had mixed reviews, yet it was considered the most influential album of the time for the mixed genre.

Limp Bizkit started doing tours around the US. For the reimagining of Woodstock in 1999, it was noted that their tours were often filled with violence and even sexual assault.

In 2001, a tour to Australia had an unfortunate situation, where a teen died in the mosh pit due to asphyxiation. The teenager was Jessica Michalik. It occurred during the Big Day Out Festival when fans rushed the mosh pit trying to get onto the stage.

During the same tour, when they moved on to Auckland, New Zealand, Durst threw water over the security personnel who were trying to stop another rush of the stage. Durst was accused of taunting the security team who were trying to do their jobs.

In court, Ed McPherson spun the incident to say security wasn’t doing enough. From evidence and videos, the crowd was already wild before Limp Bizkit took the stage.

The band was getting flack for the violence, which they don’t believe they were responsible for. Durst stated that you can’t see what’s happening in the crowd when you are up on stage. You have lights, you’re feeling the music, and hoping everyone is having a wonderful time.

They were hired for a gig, and they did the job. The people on the ground, such as security, would be responsible for the safety of everyone attending.

In 2000, Limp Bizkit was booked for WXRK Dysfunctional Family Picnic, but they showed up an hour late. Apparently, there was some confusion about the timing, and Durst said Scott Stapp, Creed’s singer, was an egomaniac. Representatives of the band handed Durst a signed copy of an anger management manual while appearing on Total Request Live.

Fred also supported Napster. He felt file-sharing was important for music to reach people. Eventually, they released “The Unquestionable Truth,” a new album and then a greatest hits record.

A year later, Durst was doing a duet with Christina Aguilera with Livin’ It Up. Richard Patrick, a frontman for Filter, said Durst embarrassed everyone in music with this duet. Durst took this to mean he was being criticized for liking other music like Britney or Christina’s stuff.

In 2002, it was said that Durst was writing songs for Britney Spears and that he was in a relationship with her. Spears denies this. He explained that it was taboo for her to date a guy like him, so she wasn’t going to admit it.

In 2005, a sex tape of Durst appeared on the internet, and he filed a lawsuit for $70 million against the 10 websites that hosted it.

Limp Bizkit decided to take a break, which allowed Durst more time to focus on his filmmaking. He was in “Population 436” and directed “The Education of Charlie Banks.” The next film was “The Longshots,” which was released in 2008.

In 2009, Limp Bizkits came back together and started touring again. Durst still kept his hands in filmmaking, and in 2018 he directed “The Fanatic” with John Travolta as the star.

Other things that have happened during Durst’s career include appearing on the cover of Insane Clown Posse for Smothered, Covered, and Chunked. In 2012, Limp Bizkit signed with Cash Money Records, which is Lil Wayne’s company. Durst, Lil Wayne, and Birdman appeared on Kevin Rudolf’s song “Champions.”

Durst was also supposed to direct and produce a Pawn Shop Chronicles film that would star Paul Walker. However, Wayne Kramer got the gig instead.

The Summer Sanitarium Tour was among other career opportunities, where Limp Bizkit opened for the headliner Metallica. Mancow Muller, a local Chicago radio star, mocked Durst, which turned the crowd into one who mocked him. After six songs, Durst left the stage and was sued for his breach of contract because he didn’t finish the show.

Another fact: Sammy Siegler was handling the drum parts for the May 2005 release of Unquestionable Truth Part 1. The album sold over 2 million copies even though it was initially released as an underground album, meaning it was not promoted or advertised. It was 24 on the Billboard 200. There has never been a sequel, and only the Greatest Hits album came out after part 1.

Feuds Of Fred Durst

These comments led to Durst being barred from Ukraine. Limp Bizkit merchandise and music have also been banned in the country.

Durst is very vocal about his beliefs and distastes, including his dislike for other musical talents. As early as 1999, he was noted for making negative statements about other artists. In one incident, he said fans of Slipknot were “ugly and fat.” Corey Taylor, the frontman for the band, responded that Durst was also insulting his own fans since quite a few people who like Slipknot also enjoyed Limp Bizkit music.

In another controversy, Durst started a feud between Placebo and even encouraged his fans to chant, “Placebo sucks.”

Durst has also been outspoken about Trent Reznor, who is part of Nine Inch Nails. Reznor stated, “It’s another thing when you think you’re David Bowie and you’ve stayed up all night to write a song. Durst might be a cool guy; I don’t know him. But his ‘art’ sucks.” Reznor earned co-credit on Hot Dog because of the many references to Nine Inch Nails in the song.

In 1999, Limp Bizkit was the subject of an insult from Marilyn Manson. His response to Manson and Reznor was, “I wish them both luck, and I feel sorry that they’re so jealous and mad at themselves that they have to talk shit.”

From his personal life perspective, Durst has had several instances of starting issues on stage or in the media. While Durst says he doesn’t like his music being misinterpreted or used to hurt other people, he has been vocal in his dislike of other musicians. Durst stated being bullied as a kid makes him dislike his music being “fuel to torture” others, which was part of why the band took time off.
