Bob Costas’ love for sports and admiration for its broadcasting was the foundation of his career as a sportscaster. He already knew he wanted to be a part of sports broadcasting when he took that admission from Samuel Irving Newhouse School of Public Communications.
He was still in the university when he began his career as a sportscaster. The Syracuse Blazers minor league hockey team made him their announcer. The team played in the North American Hockey League and Eastern Hockey League. After that, WSYR TV and radio had offered him a job in 1973.
Bob Costas graduated in 1974, then he hosted play-by-play for the American Basketball Association (ABA) Spirits of St. Louis. Then he worked at KMOX radio in St. Louis. Years later, he contributed to “Loose Balls: The Short, Wild Life of the American Basketball Association”, an ABA book.
From 1979 to 1980, he did play-by-play commentary on WGN-TV for Chicago Bull’s broadcasts during the year’s NBA. He also worked as a fill-in on KMOX radio’s St. Louis Blues broadcasts whenever Dan Kelly’s official announcer was away.
